Botswana for Condé Nast Traveller

After a little break from travelling (Covid, having a baby etc) it was such an honour to be sent on this trip to the Okavango Delta in Botswana with writer Alex Postman in September 2023.

The Okavanga Delta is a huge inland river delta that carries millions of cubic meters of water through land-locked Botswana before eventually disappearing underground. Thousands of years ago it emptied into a huge lake which sat where the Kalahari desert is now to be found, but as a result of shifting tectonic plates the water now disappears underground, meaning the waters flooding the delta are a rare and incredibly valuable resource for animals, many of which travel huge distances to the area every season.

As the waters arrive following heavy rains in neighbouring Namibia, the wetlands - dotted with islands - become full of wildlife. Elephants roam in their thousands. Zebra, lions, leopard, giraffe, buffalo- almost every great African icon you can think of - all flock to the delta to savour the waters.

Below is just a tiny selection of the images made on that trip, one of the most unique, diverse and incredible places I have ever been.
